We all know that drinking water is important to keep our body working in tip top condition, but now scientists are saying water has real, tangible benefits if you also want to lose weight.

A new study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found that the majority of people who increased their water intake by just 1 to 3 cups a day ate up to 205 calories fewer than normal. Over the course of a week that adds up to 1,435 LESS calories without making any other changes to your diet!

All participants also consumed on average up to 18g less sugar, 235mg less sodium and 21mg less cholesterol per day over the course of the study.

It’s thought that keeping a bottle of water handy stopped people reaching for their usual high-sugar, fizzy drinks and calorie-dense snacks and treats, helping not just to lose weight but to create healthier eating habits overall. The research team are calling for their findings to be used in large-scale education programmes across the US.

Other studies have shown that drinking a large glass of water before a meal can give you a satisfied ‘full’ feeling in your belly, helping to curb your appetite and prevent over-eating.

All of this is great news is you’re looking for an all-natural, easy way to control your weight and keep up healthy habits.

Here’s the key advice to take away today:

– Keep water WITH YOU. With a water bottle at your desk, in your bag or in your car you’ll be reminded to sip little and often throughout the day, to keep your skin and body hydrated and to stop your tummy rumbling.

– Got a 4pm sugar craving? Drink a large glass of water first. We often confuse hunger with thirst.

– If you’re eating out, choosing water over wine will help save you both money and calories.

– Before every meal, drink a large glug of water. It’s serves as a reminder to eat slowly and mindfully and helps control your inner Mr Greedy.
