The Circular Economy

We’re campaigning to promote a ‘closed-loop’ recycling system here in the UK. A circular economy will help to divert recyclables from going to landfill and improve recycling rates so we can create more bottles from recycled plastic!

‘A circular economy or ‘closed loop’ captures and retains materials in the system or ‘economy’, so today’s materials can be recycled to become tomorrow’s materials! This means rethinking how products are conceived at the start, minimising unnecessary use of resources, designing items to be used as long as possible, and planning to funnel material back into the economy afterwards.

Ellen MacArthur Foundation

Put simply, a circular economy minimises waste and maximises use.

Our resources are finite. The more we extract, the more we deplete the planet’s deposits and the less there is left for future generations. But when energy comes from renewable resources and end-of-life materials are recycled, everything becomes an opportunity to regenerate the environment!

Did you know that all Harrogate bottles use recycled plastic sourced in the UK?

We know it’s better to support local so we choose to source British post-consumer rPET rather than importing recycled plastic from Europe. This means that when you recycle your bottle you’re helping us to make more bottles locally – reducing carbon emissions and driving the UK circular economy!

Closing the Loop

Moving towards a circular economy cuts the need for virgin plastic and helps ensure no material ends up in the ocean or environment.

PET bottles are collected by 100% of councils in England. They are the best example of clean recycling as all parts can be recycled together –the cap and label do not need to be separated. Bottles can be recycled over and over again and new technologies can make PET’s life almost infinite. Our bottles already contain >50% recycled rPET – This already exceeds the UK Plastics Pact 2025

A bottle made entirely from recycled bottles is the ultimate goal. How do we get there?

1.  Ensure all plastic bottles are recyclable AND are being recycled.
2.  Make recycling simple and easy! This means more public recycling bins as well as a more united collection system in the UK.
3.  Limit waste exports to keep plastics as a resource for the UK economy . This will not only ensure our plastic waste is dealt with properly here in the UK but will also support investment and jobs and provide vital raw materials for the UK circular economy.

Betfred British Masters

As an official supplier to The Betfred British Masters, Harrogate Spring Water are proud to help make each tournament the most sustainable it can be.

Since 2018, we’ve encouraged all British Masters spectators to ‘Twist it, Cap it and Recycle it’ using the ‘Incredible Shrinking Bottle’ bins provided! All bottles collected at the Betfred British Masters are recycled and processed to be made into new bottles.

Roadchef Campaign

As a long-standing partner of Roadchef, we’re proud to support the ‘Talking Rubbish’ Campaign. This progressive, forward-looking campaign will see branded recycling bins placed at every Roadchef service station in the UK.

Our PET recycling bins have been designed to draw the eye with their shape, colours and simple call-to-action to Twist it cap it recycle it!  This campaign will not only drive recycling and recovery, but also raise awareness of the circular economy we’re all striving for.

All PET bottles will be collected and taken to Cleantech in Lincolnshire to be recycled into new bottles for Harrogate Spring. This closed-loop solution will help stem plastic waste exports and create a bigger market for recycled plastics here in the UK.

This is a ground-breaking example of best practise should set the standard for Motorway Service Areas (MSA’s) and other businesses to follow suit.

Ascot Partnership

Ascot Racecourse have successfully closed the loop on PET. PET bottles will be reprocessed and used to produce new bottles as part of the Ascot Harrogate sustainable closed loop recycling system. All plastic bottles are now collected in separate PET recycling bins and reprocessed into new bottles.

Ascot Racecourse have collected over half a tonne of PET so far! This is the equivalent of 32,000 bottles being recycled!
