Credit card bills, diets, deadlines ….we’d forgive you if you feel like crawling back under the duvet. Yep, January can be a pretty bleak month but it doesn’t have to feel this way. Here are some of our tried-and-tested happiness fixes, little things that really put you in a better place. If all else fails, there’s always chocolate.

1. Spend money on experiences, not stuff

Frittering money away on sale items you don’t really love is oh-so-tempting but do you REALLY need another cheapo Breton top? Think instead about what you can DO to give yourself a deeper happiness high. On our list: a full-body massage, dinner with besties, tickets to a great gig.

2. Plan your next adventure

There’s nothing like booking your next holiday to take the edge off January blues. So what’s hot for 2020? With Tokyo hosting the 2020 Olympic Games, all eyes are on Japan and its capital – but Kyoto and Osaka are on our wish list too! Why not head to the states and experience the culinary delights of New Orleans? British Airways now fly direct from London Heathrow five times a week!

3. Puppy power

Find a puppy. Have a cuddle. Isn’t that better? Dogs can pull you out of the darkest of moods. If you don’t have a puppy to hand, why not sign up to www.borrowmydoggy.com where you can find a local furry friend to take on regular walks.

4. Light more candles

Bad day at work? Try lighting candles when you get home.  Eating dinner by candlelight is very Hygge (the trendy Danish term for all things cosy and feel-good) – put your phone away and enjoy the moment. Scented candles can also help clear your mind and improve sleep.

5. Do something selfless

Sometimes chasing happiness for ourselves has the opposite effect. But doing something for others brings deeper feelings of well-being. It shifts your focus and gives you perspective. Do one thing today to make someone’s day better: buy a stranger in the queue behind you a coffee, Tweet a compliment to a person you admire, stop and chat to that homeless person you see every day.
